The Spaniards’ Spain: Basque Country, Asturias & Galicia

Introduction

The Spaniards’ Spain follows one of the country’s least-traveled northern corridors, from the Basque Country to Galicia, through fishing ports, mountain villages, cider houses, vineyards, cathedral towns, and some of the most enticing cooking in Europe. The journey is not built around spectacle, but around places whose character has not been arranged for visitors; it is simply the traditional way of life.

Journey Overview

The journey begins in San Sebastián, where the Basque Country presents itself through food, sea, and a culture that needs little explanation. Pintxos bars, La Concha, private gastronomic societies, and landmark kitchens each reveal a different side of a city where dining is part of the social architecture.

From there, the route follows the coast through Zumaia and Getaria, where dramatic cliffs, txakoli vineyards, a working fishing harbor, and grilled seafood reveal the Basque Country in a more elemental form. Bilbao adds the Gehry-designed Guggenheim, a defining work of contemporary architecture and the city’s clearest symbol of cultural reinvention.

Asturias brings a different character altogether. The Picos de Europa rise behind cider towns and working ports; Covadonga, the glacier lakes, Cabrales cheese caves, Paleolithic rock art, and the ritual of the escanciado pour all reflect traditions still rooted in mountain, pasture, and sea. Nothing here feels arranged for effect. It is simply the traditional way of life.

In Galicia, the rhythm shifts again. The Rías Baixas bring albariño estates, mussel rafts, granite villages, and seafood drawn directly from the water. The final days are set in Santiago de Compostela, where the cathedral, the Pórtico da Gloria, the rooftops, the market, and the Praza do Obradoiro give the journey a proper ending. After days shaped by coast, mountain, vineyard, and sea, the route closes where pilgrims have completed their journeys for centuries.

This is Spain’s northern edge at its most distinctive: green, coastal, deeply culinary, and still unmistakably its own.
