Waves to Wildlife: South Africa by Safari, Cycle & Shores

Introduction

This South Africa journey begins along the coast, where ocean, color, and the easy energy of Cape Town set the tone. Days move easily between the water, the city, and the mountain before the journey continues through the Winelands and along the West Coast by bike, where vineyards and open coastal roads shape the experience. From there, the route continues inland through Johannesburg before heading into Timbavati for safari, where attention turns to wildlife and time in the bush. The final days unfold along the shores of iSimangaliso, where beaches, lakes, and offshore reefs bring time on the water, from kayaking to snorkeling, and a quieter, more remote side of the country.

Journey Overview

South Africa allows for a dynamic journey that covers a range of landscapes with each region bringing a distinct layer and experience.

Begin in Cape Town, where time moves between the coastline, the mountain, and the city itself, with days shaped by the setting rather than a fixed schedule. Whether along the water, out on the peninsula, or in neighborhoods beyond the center, the experience offers a clear sense of how the city lives and how closely it is tied to its surroundings.

The Western Cape brings a more active stretch through the Winelands and along the West Coast. Riding through this region offers a closer look at the landscape, from vineyard valleys to open coastal roads. Along the way, there is time to stop at smaller towns and local producers, adding context to the scenic setting.

Johannesburg adds perspective, with time focused on the country’s recent history and how it continues to shape the present. From here, the journey continues into Timbavati, where the focus turns to wildlife and time in the reserve. Game drives are paced around the day, with early mornings and late afternoons spent out in the bush.

The final days are spent along the shores of iSimangaliso. This part of the country feels more remote, with beaches, lakes, and coastal forest coming together in one place. Time here is split between the water and the land, with kayaking, snorkeling, and time along the beach bringing a tranquil close to the journey.
