Umbria: The Quiet Heart of Italy

Introduction

Umbria occupies the center of Italy both geographically and culturally. Hill towns crown ridgelines above broad valleys, monasteries overlook river gorges, and traditions that have disappeared elsewhere remain part of everyday life. This is a region shaped by continuity. Family workshops still operate under the names above their doors. Winemakers work the same vineyards their grandparents tended. Olive mills, norcinerie, and artisan studios continue practices that have defined the region for generations. The journey moves between Perugia and Norcia, exploring a landscape where art, food, craftsmanship, and history remain closely connected to the communities that sustain them.

Journey Overview

Nine days trace a route through the heart of Umbria, from the historic streets of Perugia to the mountain valleys surrounding Norcia.

The experience begins in Perugia, where a Renaissance neighborhood remains preserved beneath the modern city and artisan workshops continue traditions passed from one generation to the next. Time in Montefalco introduces the wines and agricultural traditions that have long defined the Umbrian countryside, while Bevagna offers a glimpse into a medieval world where silk is still woven and paper is still made using centuries-old methods.

Further south, Norcia provides the foundation for exploring the Valnerina and the Sibillini Mountains. Days move between Assisi's artistic treasures, villages rebuilding after the 2016 earthquake, traditional norcinerie, Benedictine abbeys, and some of central Italy's most dramatic landscapes. Throughout the journey, encounters with local artisans, winemakers, preservationists, and chefs provide insight into the communities that continue to shape the region today.

One of the journey's defining experiences follows the route of the former Spoleto-Norcia railway. Once considered an engineering marvel, the line now provides access to remote sections of the Valnerina by bicycle, passing through tunnels, across viaducts, and into landscapes inaccessible to most visitors. It is a perspective on Umbria few travelers experience and one that reveals the scale and beauty of the region's interior.

The journey concludes in Spello, where stone lanes wind between flower-filled facades and olive groves blanket the surrounding hillsides. A hands-on culinary experience with a Michelin-starred chef provides a fitting finale to a region where craftsmanship, tradition, and a strong sense of place remain woven into everyday life.
