Athens to Santorini: The Uncharted Cyclades

Introduction

Athens to Santorini: The Uncharted Cyclades follows a less-traveled route through the Aegean, beginning with the monuments and museums of Athens and ending on Santorini’s caldera rim. Between Athens and Santorini lie Tinos, Antiparos, and Milos, three islands chosen for the depth and individuality they bring to the journey. Marble villages, ancient sanctuaries, family workshops, volcanic coastlines, and long-established ties to the sea reveal a side of the Cyclades that remains more rooted in local life and less defined by the familiar island circuit.

Journey Overview

Experience the culture, landscapes, and history of Greece on an exclusive two-week journey from Athens through Tinos, Antiparos, and Milos, concluding on Santorini’s caldera rim.

An early-morning visit to the Acropolis, the collections of the Museum of Cycladic Art, and the markets and neighborhoods of the modern city establish the historical and cultural context for the journey ahead.

The uncharted Cyclades begin on Tinos, where old footpaths cross a landscape of marble villages, dovecote valleys, granite outcrops, small farms, and family workshops. A private session with a marble sculptor in Pyrgos places guests inside one of the island’s most important living traditions.

From Tinos, cross to Delos by private sailboat. Sacred to Apollo, the island was one of the ancient Aegean’s most important archaeological and mythological centers. After exploring its temples, mosaic houses, and Terrace of the Lions with an archaeologist, continue to Rineia for swimming and lunch at anchor before sailing south to Antiparos. Three nights at The Rooster leave time for the island’s beaches and villages, restorative spa treatments, and days intentionally left open to relax and rejuvenate.

A short boat ride leads to uninhabited Despotiko, where archaeologists continue to uncover and reconstruct a sanctuary of Apollo that once commanded the surrounding sea routes. Neighboring Paros adds one of Greece’s most important early Christian churches, the archaeological finds from Despotiko, and the marble-paved village of Lefkes.

Milos introduces another Cycladic landscape entirely. Volcanic cliffs, mineral-colored coves, early-Christian catacombs, and the hillside where the Venus de Milo was discovered reveal an island with far more depth than its celebrated beaches suggest.

A helicopter crossing brings the journey to Santorini for its final two nights. Set along the quieter caldera rim, the stay pairs the island’s blue-domed churches and whitewashed Cycladic villages with the buried city of Akrotiri, a private catamaran cruise across the caldera, and sunset over one of the world’s most dramatic views.

Highlights

Visit the Acropolis in the early morning, accompanied by a private archaeologist guide, when the Parthenon, Erechtheion, and Temple of Athena Nike can be appreciated before the day’s principal crowds arrive.

Study the ancient marble figures of the Museum of Cycladic Art, created across the Aegean more than four thousand years ago and among the earliest surviving expressions of Cycladic culture.

Carve a piece of Tinian marble inside a sculptor’s atelier in Pyrgos, where the island’s most celebrated craft remains visible in workshops, churches, fountains, and carved village doorways.

Walk the old village paths of Tinos through the granite boulders of Volax and the dovecote valleys of Tarambados, meeting basket weavers and small producers along the way.

Arrive on Delos by private yacht, tracing the Sacred Way, Terrace of the Lions, mosaic houses, and temples of the ancient Aegean’s most important religious center.

Pause off uninhabited Rineia for swimming and lunch at anchor, surrounded by clear Aegean water and a shoreline left almost entirely untouched.

Unwind with three nights at The Rooster, with time for the beaches and villages of Antiparos and space to relax and rejuvenate.

Swim beneath the white arches of Kleftiko during a private charter along the volcanic coast of Milos, passing mineral cliffs, sea caves, and the painted fishing shelters of Klima.

Stand above the Aegean at the Roman theater of Milos before descending to the early-Christian catacombs and the hillside where the Venus de Milo was discovered in 1820.
