Portugal: A Living Old World Journey

Introduction

Portugal moves at its own pace and that turns out to be the right one. This journey travels the full length of the country, from Lisbon's tiled neighborhoods and the medieval villages of the Alentejo to the Templar city of Tomar, the university streets of Coimbra, and the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley. What connects it all is an Old World ambiance that has been quietly, confidently there for a very long time.

Journey Overview

Over fourteen nights, journey from Lisbon's tiled neighborhoods and the medieval villages of the Alentejo to the Templar city of Tomar, the university streets of Coimbra, and the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley.

Take in Lisbon over three full days that begins a motorcycle sidecar tour through the old neighborhoods and out to Belém covers ground a walking tour never would. An afternoon with one of the city's leading urban art guides reveals a parallel city: the muralists of Marvila, the painted pillars under the 25 de Abril Bridge. And an evening in a traditional Fado house, preceded by a private introduction from a local musician, closes the city's chapter on exactly the right note.

From Lisbon, travel East into the Alentejo, Portugal's ancient, unhurried interior. Prehistoric monoliths, Roman temples, and estate wine lunches fill the days. The nights belong to something else entirely. The Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve, the first officially designated Starlight Tourism Destination in the world, wraps 3,000 square kilometers of the region in near-total darkness, and the sky above São Lourenço do Barrocal on a clear evening is the kind that stops conversation.

Head north through the Templar stones of Tomar and the university city of Coimbra before arriving in enchanting Porto and, finally, the Douro Valley. The terraced vineyards climb the hillsides above the river in tiers that have been worked by hand for centuries, and the valley's quality of light, golden in the afternoon and soft at dusk, makes it one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe. Three nights here allow time to hike down to the river, cruise its waters on a private boat, and sit at dinner as the last of the light leaves the hills.
