Portugal: Coast, City & Vine
Introduction
All of our journeys can be completely personalized and curated with our commitment to sustainable tourism.
Journey Overview
Begin in Lisbon where ample time allows you to fully engage with all aspects of the city. A private guided walking tour moves through the medieval heart of the city, the Alfama, the Mouraria, the waterfront, revealing the layers of history embedded in every neighborhood. For those drawn to contemporary culture, an alternative route traces the city's street art scene, from the murals of Marvila to the painted pillars beneath the 25 de Abril Bridge.
A full day in Sintra offers a complete change of register. The Sintra-Cascais Natural Park surrounds a town that UNESCO recognized for good reason: the Moorish Castle rising above the forested hills, Pena Palace at the summit, the elegant gardens of the estates below. A scenic hike connects the two, with the afternoon left for the town itself.
From Sintra, the journey heads north along the coast before turning inland to Óbidos, one of Portugal's most intact medieval towns, enclosed within ancient walls and completely unhurried. A night here, after the day visitors have gone, reveals something the guidebooks rarely capture.
Lisbon's most enduring cultural gift comes on the final evening: an intimate Fado experience in one of the city's traditional Fado houses, preceded by a private introduction from a local musician. Fado was born in these neighborhoods, and hearing it properly, with context, in a small room, performed by working artists, is one of the most affecting experiences Portugal offers.
The journey continues north to Porto, a city that rewards slow attention. The historic center and Ribeira waterfront are best understood on foot; Livraria Lello, often cited as one of the world's most beautiful bookshops, is worth the queue; and a private tasting at Graham's Port Wine Cellars in Gaia, across the river from the city, closes the Porto chapter with one of Portugal's most distinctive pleasures.
The Douro Valley is the journey's final destination, and it earns its place. The terraced vineyards climb above the river in tiers that have been worked by hand for centuries, the light is golden in the afternoon and soft at dusk, and the valley rewards exactly the kind of stillness that travel rarely allows. A private boat cruise on the river, a scenic hike down to the water, and evenings at a quinta surrounded by vines bring the journey to a fitting close.
