1% for the Planet

1% for the Planet’s mission is to build, support and activate an alliance of businesses financially committed to creating a healthy planet. Almost 15 years ago, a mountain climber and a fisherman realized they had a lot more in common than a disdain for wearing a suit to work. YvonChouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies, were also passionate environmentalists that happened to be running successful businesses. More important, they understood it was good business to protect the natural resources that kept them in business. Founded in 2002, 1% for the Planet has grown into a global movement of more than 1200 member companies, of which The Evolved Traveler is one, in more than 40 countries, all donating at least 1% of annual sales to sustainability initiatives. To date, 1% for the Planet companies have given more than $150 million supporting nonprofit partners such as the Global Wildlife Conservation and Carbonfund.org.

Carbonfund.org

Carbon offsets represent the reduction of CO2 in one location, like a renewable energy or reforestation project, to offset the CO2 produced in another location, like your home or office. Carbonfund.org is leading the fight against global warming, making it easy and affordable for any individual, business or organization to reduce and offset their climate impact and hasten the transition to a clean energy future. Carbonfund.org achieves its goals through:

• Climate change education
• Carbon offsets and reductions
• Public outreach

Deforestation is responsible for about 20% of global warming. Reforestation is a critical part of the solution. Planting trees:

• Absorbs carbon dioxide to reduce climate change
• Improves air quality
• Preserves biodiversity
• Controls flooding by minimising runoff & topsoil loss
• Provides habitat and nutrition for wildlife
• Creates jobs managing tree nurseries, planting & care

The Evolved Traveler will donate 1% of gross revenue on every trip booked towards reforestation at $1.00 per tree. For example, a $25,000 trip would allow us to plant 250 trees in our guests’ name.

Global Wildlife Conservation

The mission of Global Wildlife Conservation (GWC) is to protect endangered species and habitats through science-based field action. Their global efforts, in collaboration with many committed individuals and organizations, target species and ecosystems at imminent risk of disappearing forever to ensure that they not only survive, but thrive, for the benefit of nature and society. They see biodiversity loss not as a necessary outcome of continued industrial and technological advancement, but rather, envision a world where the full value of natural resources will be understood to have its roots in our planet’s unique biodiversity and managed sustainability.

Since their founding, GWC’s leading scientists, with field experience in over 50 countries, have built an extensive network of allied researchers and conservationists that has enabled them to conserve wildlife and habitats in more than 40 countries, helped establish more than 20 new nature reserves, protected more than 100 endangered species and 20,000 species overall, and helped educate over 50 undergraduate and graduate students. GWC’s strengths lie in providing conservation leadership, implementing researched solutions, and monitoring the impact of global conservation activities.

Their approach of increasing capacity of in-country partner organizations, training the next generation of conservation leaders across the world, and working with partners to integrate our conservation solutions with local communities helps ensure the long-term conservation success of their projects.
